Accelerated Reader FAQ's
Who can participate in the AR program?
Every one from the T K Gorman Catholic School community is welcome to participate if interested. All students are entered as participants after they have enrolled. Faculty and families may sign up with the librarian any time during the year.
Is AR required by every student?
No, AR in this school is an incentive program with lots of rewards, challenges, and events to promote and encourage individual reading. There will also be library stores for participating students to use their reading points on some money-free shopping.
How many tests do you have?
Our AR quiz list is growing every year. At this point we have 3700 quizzes, with about 900 on non-fiction books.
What is a Partner In Reading?
A parent, guardian, or even a fellow student may team up with a Gorman student to become reading buddies. Through this special partnership, we are hoping that families and friends may spend some quality time together by sharing the joy of reading. They may also give each other reading tips and recommendations, or simply push each other forward like any buddy will do.
Reading teams will compete for the Top Reading Team honor and may also qualify for the Year End Six Flags Party if they are the leaders. Each member of the winning teams has to contribute at least 30 % of the combined scores to be eligible.
How can I be successful if I only want to read the tiny books which hardly have any points?
We want our readers to be successful at different levels and also according to their interests. We have honors like Perfect Readers and Non-fiction Challenge that will allow readers focus on smaller books and non-fiction books and still be successful and motivated. Students maintaining excellent reading records or passing many non-fiction quizzes may qualify in most of our events with flying colors.
How do I identify the AR books?
Each AR book is marked with a star on the book spine and a special stamp indicating the reading level, point and quiz number inside.
Moreover, readers may sign in their accounts to see all Gorman owned quizzes. They may search by quiz titles, authors, reading and point levels by pressing ALT key and V for menu options.
There are also printed lists inside the libraries. In addition to these lists, AR books may be identified by searching the Online Catalog. Please see the librarian for further assistance.
Can I recommend new quizzes for books that I have read?
Mostly certainly! We would love to find out what books you are reading and whether or not an AR quiz is available. Please send recommendations of book and quiz purchase to Mrs. Wellmon.
You may adopt an AR quiz and participate in the program according to your own pace and reading interests. To adopt a quiz, just fill out a request form online or pick one up from the library. Upon availability, each quiz costs $3.00 and payment is due when each request is made.
Readers may check the Accelerated Reader website at http://www.renlearn.com/store/quiz_home.asp to check for availability of titles.
Why do I have to do the AR program?
We believe in the power and joy of reading and would like to have you on a ride with us. However AR is not a mandatory part of our curriculum. We use the incentive system so that readers may be properly recognized and rewarded while the non-readers will also be motivated to join us to enjoy the fun and success of reading.
